Courtallam – Thamirabharani – P9

After Main falls, why should we miss five falls as the climate is supporting and its the right time to enjoy:), so we went directly to Five falls after taking a bath in Main falls . The main reason is all the waterfalls were apt for taking bath and we felt that we are lucky enough to enjoy. With no time, we came to Five falls and it was more & more beautiful. In five falls, 3 falls for women and 2 for men.

Courtallam – Thamirabharani – P8

Our next day started with enthusiasm and slowly we discussed on why not we go to Main falls for bath ,as we came all the way here and what is the need to start so early to Chennai. With no time, All agreed and we started to Main Falls of  Courtallam.

I really don’t know how to express the Beauty & Gigantism of Main Falls..  It was such a beauty. Climate supported that day with a little bit of drizzle which was more pleasant than the previous day .

Courtallam – Thamirabharani – P7

The choice to visit Courtallam was also unexpected, as previous night was heavily raining in the surroundings of Thirunelveli. We got it may be the ideal time to appreciate the waterfalls and it turned out be so evident , as we spent good time in the waterfalls , though crowd was moderate in Courtallam . After Old Courtallam, we wrapped up our lunch and went to Tenkasi & decided to vacate the room to spend in a resort in Courtallam that night.
We had our evening time free and wanted to visit nearby Temple. We thought we can go to Achankovil , it is 32KM from Tenkasi, One of most wonderful scenic dense forest route . The Temple was inside a dense forest and checkpost will be closed after 6.00PM as they will not allow vehicles due to forest restrictions. So chose to begin early , so we can reach at-least by 5PM and return as quickly as time permits.
Achankovil –
P.S. Details Referenced from Wiki –
Lord Ayyappa / Aiyanar presides there in the form of grihastha (householder) and the idol faces east. It is believed to installed by Lord Parasurama himself. The Pratishta of Lord Ayyappa here is quite unique from that of other Sastha shrines in Kerala. The idol is known as Rudraksha sila. He is depicted as a grihasthashrami (one who leads a married life) along with his two consorts Poorna and Pushkala. The temple is famed for curing poisonous Snakebites and thus Ayyappa is often portraited as a Mahavaidya (great physician). The right palm of the idol always keeps Chandanam (Sandalwood) and Theertham (sacred water) which is thought to have medicinal properties.
Map to reach Achankovil From Tenkasi –

Distance from Other Places –
P.S – Information referenced from wiki

  • Thiruvananthapuram:(124 km) via Nedumangad – Kulathupuzha – Thenmala – Chenkottai
  • Kollam:(85 km) via Kottarakkara – Punalur
  • Pathanapuram:(45 km) via Konni – Achankovil road
  • Kulathupuzha:(63 km) via Thenmala – Aryankavu, Shenkottai
  • Konni:(41 km) via Kalleli – Kadiyar – Uliyanad – Mannarappara – Thura
  • Punalur:(43 km) via Kumaramkudy-Mullumala route, but the route is not in a good condition.

Railway: The nearest railway stations are at Thenmala, Kottarakkara and Punalur.
Airports: Thiruvananthapuram international airport is about 140 km and Cochin international airport about 180 km.
The route to Achankovil will be very narrow and through the hill, its not so easy to stop the vehicle in the middle. The first picture was taken on the way to the temple.

We returned to Tenkasi around 7.30 PM that day . We wrapped up our dinner and vacated the room in Tenkasi & went to Courtallam for the resort stay as I liked the hill backdrop and the atmosphere was peaceful , Surprisingly they allocated a resort in a remote place which was ideal for bachelor’s not for family . I checked with the resort owner and came to know that the resort near-by main road was not available that time. Any way, it was comfortable for family of 4 . We decided to visit the remaining couple of falls and wanted to start early to chennai next day … But it doesn’t happen’d after visiting Main and Five falls … lol 🙂

Courtallam – Thamirabharani – P5

This place was nearby a Temple as it was beautiful, so we decided to spend some time here and go for the holy plunge. It was dry and very hot climate that day. We spent almost close to 2 hours here. We did our holy plunge as per my dad’s wish after capturing the pictures.

After completion of this one-time event, we discussed on exploring other options around Tenkasi. Courtallam is very close to Tenkasi. So we discussed on exploring Courtallam that day afternoon and to start our return Journey the next day Morning. That was the Plan that moment, but after looking at the falls in Old Courtallam… do you think we could have started our return Journey the next day Morning …. No !!!!!!…

Courtallam – Thamirabharani – P3

Time – 4 AM – Thirunelveli –

After the room hunt disaster in Tirunelveli, we understood it could have been a sign from the nature to return 🙂 , yet we realized after reaching the City. We requested the driver to take rest and began searching for the alternatives around Tirunelveli. Around 24 places, Mahapushkaram occasion was organized and my father recommended to go a closest spot. Ambasamuthiram is one of the place , It is one of the wonderful Scenic spot in South Tamilnadu . We doubt we may not get stay in Ambasamuthiram and chose to go to Tenkasi for stay. From Tirunelveli to Tenkasi , the distance is close to 50 KM . From Tenkasi, Ambasamuthiram was around 35 KM.

We are uncertain about whether we would get the stay in Tenkasi, how ever the hotel receptionist was certain that stay can be profited in Tenkasi. This time, we truly needed to get things straight, as a day went in fiasco subsequent to voyaging more than 500KM  and would prefer not to squander another 100 KM. Rain stopped around 4.30 AM. We finally decided to take a call to reach Tenkasi. Driver agreed  and we reached Tenkasi around 5.30 AM.

Time – 5.30 AM – Tenkasi –

Surprisingly after reaching Tenkasi, the events started changing. We got the stay in the Tenkasi Town itself and our ultimate goal that time is to take rest first and after 10.30 AM, we would wanted to draft a plan for Ambasamuthiram. We took rest and wake up around 9.30 AM and started looking for options for Breakfast. Hotel Anandha Bhavan in Tenkasi , It was a good choice for breakfast as the quality of food/taste was OK and price was decent.

Time – 10.30 AM – Ambasamuthiram –

Started around 10.30 AM for Ambasamuthiram and reached the town. Town overflowed with People for the Pushkaram occasion , that was really well-arranged in this small town. We saw few places and chose to go couple of more miles for a decent spot for Holy Plunge …..

Let me start sharing the Pictures !!

Courtallam – Thamirabharani – P1

Greetings all, Let me start the Journey of  visiting a couple of temples , that took a turn in the middle and ended up in a memorable Journey of Courtallam and Thamirabharani that will be remembered for a long time in my life as plenty of decision making was happening on the run  !!!!… Even I m surprised !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time 7 AM – From Kanchipuram –

Last Year , Second half was busy with official commitments and had no time to relax, I was thinking to visit couple of temples near by Kumbakonam and also wanted to Visit Tanjore , but the later doesn’t happen by the way. The right time came during Dusherra Weekend, I planned to visit those temple as it will take a day to reach and return .

I took an additional day off ( Friday ) and planned to Visit Tanjore as well. When we actually started our Journey from Kanchipuram and on the way to Pondicherry, things started to change and plenty of unplanned requests came from my dad … lol 🙂

Time 10 AM – Near Pondicherry –

As we reach Pondicherry, my father suggested that he needed to Visit Thirunelveli for Thamirabharani Maha Pushkaram ( It happens once in 144 Years ) . Initially I was not convinced because of the distance that we will have to travel as the time is 11 AM in  Pondicherry already , I was afraid whether we may miss the actual plan of visiting the temples and I really don’t want to mess that up for a reason and suggested my dad that I wanted to visit those temples first and later we can decide on further proceedings on Thirunelveli . Surprisingly my dad said OK 🙂 ...

Time 3 PM – Vaitheeswaran Temple  –

We reached Vaitheeswaran temple around 3 PM . We could see the temple is closed and will be open around 4.30 PM .

We finished up our darshan here and visited an another temple around 6.30 PM. So we finally completed our actual plan and my dad’s proposal came in for review again.

During a long journey, Car driver should co-operate else it will be a big mess and all the unplanned events will be collapsed, so we discussed the plans with him and with no time, he agreed and even he wanted to visit Tirunelveli as well. So we all are in sync and the plan set for Thirunelveli . So from Kumbakonam, the easiest way to reach Thirunelveli is to reach Thiruchi from Kumbakonam and take the NH from there .

The route plan was really excellent, but we never know there are more surprises awaited for us on the way to Thirunelveli !!!!!!!!!!!
